The early history knowledge that you wish students had, but haven’t had time to include…until now.

MY OWN MUSIC HISTORY materials help students understand Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and 20th Century music history milestones which become reference points for students’ subsequent learning. Students use stickers and coloring personal reference charts using color coding to differentiate the periods, composers, and characteristics:

Baroque=gold; suggests royalty, nobility, high church, ornamentation
Classical=blue; suggests order, structure, more restrained style
Romantic=red; suggests strong emotion, expression, nationalism
20th century=green: suggests growth and a combination of blue and gold

Each packet can be completed in a single session, or used as a basis to include as much enrichment as desired with no teacher prep required.

Description

Packet 1:  Milestones of Music History Chart with Stickers and A Timeline of Composers

From the moment a student places his or her autograph and birthdate on the Milestones of Music History chart beneath those of Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and Chopin, a personal historical foundation is begun. This is the beginning of understanding the relatedness of the “big picture” of historical sequence and helps students organize an initial history framework for the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Twentieth Century periods.

Students color code each period and place stickers (dates, best-known composers, a contemporaneous American history event, and a musical term associated with each period) on the black and white charts to create color versions as pictured.  This basic information is now an accessible and foundational reference for students as they encounter all new information related to music history.

Includes instructions and reduced-size sample charts.

Dig Deeper into Details of Music History with
Student Packet 2:
Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and 20th-Century Detail Charts

Students place historical events and composer’s names and date stickers on the appropriate timelines in chronological order of composers’ birth. The stickers vary in length in order to illustrate the lifespan of each composer.

Includes 4 color timeline charts and labels for Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and 20th Century. These 11” X 17”  charts and labels can be folded to fit into an 8 ½ X 11” binder.

In addition, packet 2 also includes
Students’ Own Music History Informational Sheets for Student Use (Download)

Students record their own repertoire, performances, and information (style, society, and instruments) that relates to their music study using these sheets (Repertoire Sheets, Blank Composer Information Sheets, and Musical Period Information Sheets, 3 for each of the four periods for a total of 12 pages). Their personal history becomes a treasured record through the years and helps students understand how the music they have learned fits into history. Download includes full-color completed sample charts and instructions.

My Own Music History is a wonderful tool to help students understand music history and composers. The beginning set makes it easy to introduce concepts in an uncomplicated manner and lays the groundwork for a more in-depth study. Students will be able to connect music history with other historical events, creating a timeline giving them points of reference. Since they are creating this book themselves, they are more likely to remember the details.

Adding the 2nd student packet allows you to dive deeper into composers and eras. Students create reference sheets that they will refer to as they work on their own music history by tracking the pieces that they have learned and the composers who wrote them. It will be a project they will always keep and treasure.
